Choosing Safer Bike Routes through Baltimore City

If you follow the link to transit choices.org and then go to the bike section - Bike Baltimore - they talk about the Jones Falls trail and the establishment of a North-South bike route along Maryland Ave, Cathedral etc. Obviously a dedicated bike trail is first choice, and establishment of a bike route on the side of a busy road is an improvement. But thoughtout my years of biking through the city my focus has been to identifying low traffic routes. For example Guildford St. stops at North Avenue but you can still cross with a bike. Gough and Bank St are relatively comfortable because they run into Patterson Park. In short, if through-traffic on quieter residential streets could be minimized using 'barriers' it can make for comfortable cycling.
